- Accelerated Card Company review

- MicroExcel applied for a merchant account through this service so I'll
- relate my experiences.

- Costs: $195 application fee, processing & shipping. This fee is
- non-refundable. That's right, the money is gone whether or not you get
- an account.

- Charge processing software: $295 (single user) Software programs will
- operate in DOS, Windows, and MAC environments. The DOS & Windows
- versions also allow a BBS to process transactions on-line, real-time,
- automatically.

- Monthly statement fee: $7.50

- Per charge costs: 20 cents plus 2.25% - 2.75% of amount.
- (I was charged the maximum - 2.75%)

- I received an application from ACC a few days after
- requesting it. The three page application is clearly laid
- out. You will need:

- 1) Basic contact information and social security info.
- 2) Note any past business or bankruptcies.
- 3) Your banks contact info. as a reference.
- 4) Attach a voided business check.
- 5) Photocopies of social security card and drive's license.
- 6) List two business to business accounts.

- Listing two business to business accounts can be a problem if you are
- just starting out. I don't know how much weight these references have
- in the process. I suppose it demonstrates that other businesses are
- willing to give you credit.

- It's important to remember that Accelerated Card Company is NOT the one
- granting you the merchant account. This was my impression from talking
- to them but it is wrong. A bank will review your application and issue
- a thumbs up or down on the deal. ACC includes the following paragraph
- in their instructions but it does not tell you the significance of each
- item.

- 1) A description of your business stating exactly what you
- do and how you do business.
- 2) Your refund policy.
- 3) A brief personal bio/background (resume) of the
- principal(s) of the business.
- 4) Sample of product(if feasible) and/or ads, brochures,
- catalogs, or other sales materials.
- 5) Professional Business Plan

- Basically they are asking for whatever you've got. If I understand ACC
- correctly, your personal credit history is the most important element.
- I my case the credit report was too clean. I had taken out a mortgage
- ten years ago and paid it off in one year. That's all there was.

- I sent my application to ACC on April 13, 1995. It was the first
- submitted to the bank out of 40 or so. After three weeks, half of the
- others had cleared but not mine. One month into the process a
- representative for the bank or MasterCard\VISA came by for an on site
- inspection. The purpose of the visit was to determine if I was really
- in business. Most of the questions asked, such as the size of my office
- and the like, had little to do with anything. The representative wasn't
- interested in a demo of my software. From what I've seen, a shareware
- author is in a difficult if not impossible position. I just don't see
- how one is supposed to prove your in the software business when the
- inspectors are not familiar with the business.

- The representative did take a picture of my office and my home's exterior.
- Having a fax machine helps and inventory on hand is important.

- A couple of weeks after the site visit, ACC called saying the bank
- wanted a copy of a blank business check. This makes sense since the
- original check sent with the application was a temporary because the
- checking account was opened only the day before.

- As of May 26, 1995 I was really getting down to the wire. CD publishers
- were just getting copies of my work in and expecting me to buy stock. A
- Internet Web page was ready to go but couldn't be advertised until the
- merchant account was confirmed. I call Dave Dauer who gave me a phone
- number for someone at ACC handling the bank. I was hoping they
- would contact the bank and find out what was holding things up. No such
- luck. At best they would call me when my name appeared on the bank's
- list of approved accounts.

- ACC's forms say processing takes about two weeks. I understand the bank
- moved while my application was in the works which helps explain why I
- was still waiting after 5 weeks. I just wish there were some means of
- pushing the bank to act one way or the other. Their delay burned up all
- the time I allotted for getting a merchant account, leaving my business
- in a bad spot with suppliers who were expecting to see some orders.

- The account finally went through with some pushing by Dave Dauer of
- DataBlue. No special requirements were attached to my account. Other
- authors were not so lucky. Bank required most of them to leave a
- percentage of their credit card changes with the bank for the first year or
- something like that. These authors were very unhappy. One author got
- on CompuServe and openly blasted ACC.

- The last I heard, DataBlue was dropping Accelerated Card Company.
- This is one of the advantages of an independent agent like
- Dave Dauer. If the application processing agent is not performing,
- he can dump them for someone else with better services.

- My package deal included EC Auth credit authorization software the DOS
- version. ACC sent me a fax with my account numbers. It was impossible
- to get the software running since it requires a special setup string for
- the modem. If you've have ever tried to do this, you know what a
- nightmare it is and the software didn't come with a list of setup
- strings for common modems. I skipped using the service altogether. I
- work hard to make my software the best it can be and have grown impatient
- with other software.

- In Jan. of 1996 I received a call from ACC asking why my account wasn't
- active. I explained I was unhappy with the software. They recommended I
- call the software company. To their credit, ACC wanted to assure me
- they were there to help.

- The top of the form I received from ACC did say, "Upon receipt, contact
- EC Auth - Download Division to receive download instructions." I didn't
- know what this really meant. I personally avoid calling manufactures
- since I know they expect me to try on my own first. If I, a software
- author, can't make something work then it product has real problems.

- I did finally call and as it turned out, calling the software
- manufacture is not optional - it is required! The account numbers on the
- forms sent are not complete. I could never have activated the software
- on my own. Gee Whiz! It would have been very helpful to know this in
- advance.

- The call went well. They walked me through a quick configuration and
- provided the setup string for my modem. The software test worked but
- the bank, or someone, had turned off my account. Terrific. It would have
- been nice if someone told me this before getting down to the wire yet
- again! I have a new product scheduled for release in four days with advance
- orders and my credit card processing is down. What's nexted.

- As you can see, the process doesn't necessarily work very well for us
- authors. If you know about other services, I'd certainly like to hear
- about them. I believe companies exist to process card charges on your
- behalf. This might make things much easier but I'm sure it would cost a
- little more. There is an Internet service called First Virtual which is
- even easier but, the last I heard, costs 8 percent of the charge.
